Excerpt from “[Departed] Priests,” a mimro, [that is, a metrical homily] by Jacob of Sarug. |
Death trampled on the adornment of the priests in the dwelling place of Sheol, and it destroyed the splendor of the ministers in the place of destruction.
The Church’s wedding guests were turned into dust in the dwelling place of Sheol. The sounds of their harps were silent, and they ceased.
Church[es] were empty of their beautiful chants, and naves were devoid of their sweet melodies. |
The bema of the priests cries out to them in great pain, and the sanctuary mourns [them] with passionate sorrow.
The sanctuary weeps for them bitterly, and sacred vessels are clothed in pain because of the passing |
Of those who were temples for the Spirit in the sanctuary, and who celebrated and offered up all the Divine Mysteries, | ܗܳܠܶܝܢ ܕܰܗܘܰܘ ܢܰܘ̈ܣܶܐ ܠܪܽܘܚܐ ܒܓܰܘ ܒܶܝܬ ܩܽܘܕܫܐ܆ ܘܫܰܡܠܺܝܘ ܘܟܰܗܶܢܘ ܟܽܠܗܽܘܢ ܐܪ̈ܳܙܶܐ ܕܰܐܠܳܗܽܘܬܐ ܀ |
Before they [the priests] entered eternal rest, they finished the course of righteousness with long stations and prayers day and night.
They beautifully administered the Holy Mysteries at the holy altar and adorned the Church with their spiritual hymns.
The Church honors their bodies in faith and the holy altar at which they always celebrated [the Divine Mysteries].
Since their Alleluias [resounding] from the sanctuary have been silenced now, they thunder there, in the heavenly Church of the firstborn.
Since their holy footsteps deserted the temple, they leap with spiritual beings there, in the heights above.
Since they [the priests] stopped chanting and singing, they are joined together [with spiritual beings] there, where they sing glory every day.
The Just dwell in a place where there is neither grief nor groans. It is this place that the priests who died inhabit.
They long for the Thunder of Life, the gentle One; they wait for the Living Voice to gladden them.
[The Living Voice] raises their bodies from dirt, and at the resurrection, he summons their dust and makes new their forms.
From the gloomy darkness of Sheol, [the Living Voice] leads out the body that death bounded and tied up in the dwelling place of Sheol.
[The priests] are with us although they are now silenced in Sheol, and the sound of their joyful shouts thunders in their choirs.
They are united with us, and they are [our] intercessors every hour; they served Christ the King sacramentally.
The Church praises in thanksgiving and sings glory to the Bridegroom, her Spouse, because of the way of life of those who worked and labored with him.
Behold the priesthood carries fire not to burn but to protect, from the burning fire, the one who draws near it.
The priesthood carries the keys of above and below and has authority; it closes and opens, and hosts do not hinder it.
The priesthood binds and loosens, and the companions of Gabriel do not constrain it; it commands in the heights, and its word endures above in Heaven.
It [the priesthood] calls the Spirit, and it [the Spirit] descends to it [the priesthood] to hover, and at its [Spirit] hovering the watchers marvel at how high it [the priesthood] rose.
The fiery seraphim do not have power over the priesthood; with tongs [Is 6:6], they seize the great mysteries while afraid.
Behold goodness is carried out through you, Adam’s race; how many mouths you have to glorify the Mercies that had pity on you!
Neither Seraphim were sent to forgive our debts, nor angels to distribute the Medicine to our weakness. |
Behold power has been granted to worthless dust so that it may distribute the Medicine of Life that freely heals. |
Blessed is he who raised up shepherds in the churches to forgive the flock with their oblations. |
May our brothers who fell asleep and our fathers who were separated from us be gladdened in you in the kingdom of heaven when You come.
May the priests who died be glad in you, [O] Son of God, and may they rejoice in you when you come in the glory of your Father.
[O] Son of God, give rest in [your heavenly] kingdom to the priests who served you in the sanctuary that is full of splendor.
Make the pure priests who have left us and departed from among us dwell in the heavenly resting place. |
May the hands of the priests that offered the sacrifice on behalf of sinners clap among the company of those who glorify you.
May their fingers that consecrated your Body and your Living Blood hold the branches of the great glory and go out to meet you.
May their pure mouths, which extol you with spiritual hymns, sing glory in the kingdom of heaven along with your holy ones.
May their glorious voices that cried out to you, O Lord: “Holy Holy,” glorify your name on the day of the resurrection along with the spiritual beings.
May also their lips that were [like] incense pleasing to you shout glory among the watchers in paradise.
Make them worthy to glorify you among the spiritual ones because they have sung chants and hymns for you.
Make them recline in the bridal chamber filled with delight because of their watchfulness, vigilance, and their rising day and night.
May they glorify you, [O] Lord, along with angels and the choir of the watchers because of the hymns in the earthly Church.
Make the children of your Mysteries hear your sweet voice, Lord: “Come, enter, and inherit the Garden of Delights.”
In the church of the heavenly firstborn, place them with the Holy Ones and the Just Ones who labored and served you.
Join all the spirits of our brothers, the priests, with the watchers that they may glorify you in the kingdom.
In the place of the living, the abode filled with delights, make them rejoice on your glorious day when you appear.
